Five Reasons you Need to Clean and Maintain your Gutters

As a homeowner in Gig Harbor, Tacoma, or Port Orchard, you’ve likely seen gutters filled to the brim with debris, and the occasional living organism. This is troublesome for many reasons. So, here are five reasons to keep those gutters clean.

First, let’s review the importance of your home’s gutters and downspouts. The sole purpose of your gutters is to move water away from your home – not just your roof. This keeps your roof, foundation, and landscaping safe from water damage.

  1. Prevent Water Damage. By cleaning and maintain your gutters you are allowing your gutters to do their job. If your gutters are full, they aren’t able to move water away from your roof. Which is not a good thing. A full gutter allows moisture to sit at the edge of your roof with nowhere to go.

  2. Protect your Roof. Clogged gutters give rainwater nowhere to go, so when water continues to flood over, it will likely lead to a roof that leaks.

  3. Protect your Foundation. Gutters play an important role in keeping your home’s foundation safe. A properly installed gutter system will not only take water away from your roof, but it will also take water at least 3-5 feet away from your home. Problems happen when water pools around your foundation. It creates instability in the spring and summer months, and the water can crack your foundation when it freezes in the winter.

  4. Keep Pests at Bay. Clogged gutters are an open invitation for birds, insects, and rodents, which is the last thing any homeowner wants. Remove the temptation and keep those gutters clear!

  5. They Save You Money. Like with many systems in your home, maintenance will save you money in the long run. With clean and clear gutters and downspouts, you will minimize costly damage to your home.

We recommend you clean your gutters in the early fall and spring. The weather is likely to cooperate, making this job easier to tackle.
