Trivia Tuesday: Why is Flashing so Important?

Flashing is a critical component of your roof system, but since it’s not center stage like shingles, it’s often overlooked. So, why flashing is so important? Let’s learn a little more.

Flashing is a piece of metal used to prevent water from seeping into areas of the roof where there is an interruption with the roofing materials, like chimneys, vent pipes, or the perimeter of the roof. Flashing prevents leaks and protects the deck (the first layer of roofing) and underlayment.

Flashing is so important for the following reasons:

  • It’s used to protect your roof decking and underlayment from any penetration – like a skylight, vent, or chimney.

  • It’s often the first place we find leaks

Flashing needs to be routinely inspected and well taken care of. If you’d like to learn more about roof flashing, check out this blog post: Roof Flashing | All You Need to Know.
