Tip Tuesday – Never Power Wash your Roof

Owning a home in Gig Harbor, Bremerton, or Tacoma means at some point, moss will grow on your roof – it’s just part of living in the Pacific Northwest. Moss is not only unsightly, it’s also bad for your roof. Did you know if you let it grow long enough, it will start to push your shingles up?

When it comes time to get rid of mold or mildew on your roof, never use a power washer. We know it’s tempting, but the pressure will likely damage your shingles by stripping away granules from asphalt shingles. It can also drive water up and under the shingles, causing leaks and potentially deck rot.

Roof cleaning can be done in an afternoon. We recommend you gently remove the moss using baking soda, powdered laundry detergent, or Moss Out for Roofs, and then use a leaf blower to push away any debris.

Finish by applying a Zinc treatment to your roof to kill any moss that may remain, and to help keep future growth at bay. Zinc is safe, and it won’t harm your pets, children, or your lawn.

As always, we are here to help if you need it. If keeping the moss at bay is too much, contact us today
