Top Five Things Endanger Your Roof

The roof on your home in Gig Harbor, Tacoma, or Port Orchard works hard to keep the weather outside. But what poses some of the biggest risks to your roof? Let’s learn more.

Improper Ventilation

It might not seem like it can cause extensive damage, but improper ventilation can lead to expensive repairs and higher than necessary utility bills. Issues like rust, roof rot, and mildew are some of the most common, but it also requires your home’s HVAC system to work harder than it needs to. Learn all about how important roof ventilation is in this recent blog post: What Does Poor Ventilation do to Your Roof?

Trees become an issue when they are too close to your roof. You want to check to make sure they are properly trimmed back so they do not encroach on your home. This can cause damage to your roof’s shingles and can also encourage moss to develop.

Strong winds can blow the shingles off your roof leaving areas of your roof exposed to rain. After a wind storm, be sure to check your roof for cracked or missing shingles. If any are missing, replace them right away or call in a professional. The sooner you are able to repair any damage, the better.

Moss is not only unsightly, but it can also be especially troublesome. Moss acts just like a sponge, and when it gets wet it holds the water on your shingles. If left long enough, that water will seep through the shingle and to the underlayment.

Faulty Gutters and Downspouts

As you probably know, gutters and downspouts are meant to catch rainwater from the roof and steer it away from your property. But if your gutter system is clogged or in any type of disrepair it has a big impact on your roof. Rather than being directed away from your home, rainwater will begin to pool on top of the roof, likely causing rot, and possibly more issues.
