What you Need to Know About Roof Repair

Your home in Gig Harbor, Port Orchard, Silverdale, or Tacoma might not need and entirely new roof – it might just need some repairs. Before you get started, here what you should know about roof repairs.

But first, if you’re wondering whether you need to replace or repair, check out a recent blog post here.

Safety First

You can never be too safe when it comes to roof repairs. Before you head up the ladder, take a minute to review our safety tips here.

Make it Match

If you need to replace just a few shingles, you might not think to find shingles that match exactly. But even the slightest variations in color or length are noticeable from a distance. Maintain your curb appeal and be sure to find an exact match.

Salvage Shingles if you Can

If your shingles are cracked, you might be able to avoid purchasing new shingles by salving what you have. Start with a thick bead of roofing sealant under the crack and press the shingle down. Then apply a second bead of sealant on top of the crack. Then spread the sealant with a putty knife. To effectively camouflage this repair, check your gutter for granules and then place them over the sealant.

If your shingles are curling, you can glue the curling shingles down with glue or caulking and place a brick over it to weigh it down.

Vents and Flashing

Roof vents and flashing are notorious for letting in moisture, so be sure you properly seal around these areas. If the flashing is loose or has gaps around it, secure it with nails, or roof cement, or both. You might notice caulking that’s cracked, which needs to be repaired as well.

Nails Belong Under the Shingle

If you are replacing shingles that are cracked or missing, you need to make sure you keep all nails under the shingle just above it. If that can’t be done, use caulk or roof sealant over the nail heads. And always use aluminum or galvanized steel nails that won’t easily rust.
